Losing your cellphone can be stressful. But did you know that you can try to recover your device? By activating the "Find My Device" feature, you can track your phone’s location on a map.
For this to work, your phone needs to be linked to an account (Google or Apple ID), connected to the Internet via mobile data or Wi-Fi, and have GPS and remote location services enabled. If the device is offline, you will be able to view its last known location.
To enable this feature on Android, go to settings and select the following options: Biometrics and Security > Find My Phone > Enable. In newer versions, this feature is available under Settings > Security > Find My Device.
Once enabled, you can locate your device through the website https://android.com/find or by installing the "Find My Device" app on another device logged into the same Google account.
For iOS devices, go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone > Enable. To track your device even when it's offline, turn on the "Find My network" option. If you want to share your device's location with Apple when the battery is low, enable "Send Last Location."
To find your device, visit https://icloud.com/find using the same user account or use "Find My" app on another device logged into the same user account.
In addition to displaying the location on a map, both Android and iOS offer features to help you find and protect your cellphone. These include playing a sound to help locate the device and options for protecting your data if the phone is lost or stolen, such as locking the screen or remotely erasing all data.
On Android, the "Protect device" option, and in iOS, the "Mark as Lost" option, lets you lock the screen with a password and display a message with contact information so that, if found, the device can be returned.
Finally, don't forget to make a backup. If recovering the lost device is not possible, you may need to remotely erase all your data. Having a secure copy of all your files and information ensures that you can restore them on a new device, thus minimizing inconveniences and the loss of data.
