Have You Heard about a Data Leak that Might Affect You?

Description

Data leaks happen when personal data is accessed, collected, or shared with third parties over the Internet, often without consent. As our use of the Internet grows, more services collect our personal information, especially those that ask us to register, and therefore the risks increase.

But what should you do if you learn about a data leak? If you are notified by a company or learn from a third party about a leak that could potentially affect you, it's important to confirm the information through official sources and act quickly to minimize the impact. Try to find the following information:

what data was leaked,
when the leak occurred, and
what actions is the company adopting to mitigate the damage.

If the leak is confirmed and involves your personal data, ask the organization for details (i.e., the Controller). If the organization doesn't respond to your request or you're not sure which institution is involved, try contacting your country’s data protection authority.

Implement any mitigation measures you may receive and don't visit websites or open files that say they will confirm or display the leaked data. Additionally, protect your accounts by changing any exposed passwords immediately (don't use the same password across multiple accounts).

After a leak, it's common to see an increase in scam attempts via SMS, email, and phone calls, so stay alert. If you find your data has been used fraudulently, file a police report.

Below it, a man is browsing the Internet, reading newspapers and news about the leak. He then receives an official email confirming the data leak, including some details of the event.

In the third scene, the man visits the official website of the organization involved in the leak. He follows the recommended mitigation measures, such as changing any exposed passwords and informing his financial institution. At the top of the screen is the phrase “Implement any mitigation measures you receive”.

In the final scene, the screen reads “Stay informed, adopt good security practices and protect yourself in case of data leaks”.
