Erasing cellphone data remotely

Description

Your cellphone contains highly important personal data such as emails, contact information, photos of you and your family, banking apps, e-commerce apps, and more.

It's no wonder that loss or theft of your phone can be a major headache. If it falls into the hands of thieves and scammers, your data and apps might be stolen and misused, leading to significant losses. The good news is that there are steps you can take to minimize these problems.

One measure is to remotely erase all the content from the cellphone. To do this, the device must have the remote location service enabled. It is also recommended to have the backup feature enabled so you can restore the data to another device. To learn how to enable these services on your phone, check out the "Cellphone Remote Location" and "Cellphone Backup" videos by the Net Citizen project.

If the location and backup services are enabled on your lost cellphone, you can erase its data remotely using another phone with the same account or by accessing specific websites.

For Android devices, go to the "Find My Device" app or visit https://android.com/find using the account registered on the device. Select the device you wish to erase, then choose the "Erase Device" option (you may need to provide your login credentials) and confirm. If the device is powered on and connected to the Internet, the process will start immediately. If not, it will begin as soon as the device reconnects. Once it is erased, you will no longer be able to access the device via "Find My Device" as it will be logged out of all accounts. Note that this process does not necessarily erase data from the memory card.

For iOS devices, use the "Find My" app or go to https://icloud.com/find with your account. Select the desired device, choose the "Erase This Device" option, and enter your Apple ID password (you may need to enter a verification code sent to another device). Then follow the remaining instructions. If the device is online, the process of erasing its content will begin immediately. If not, it will start as soon as the device reconnects.

If the device is found or you purchase a new one, you can restore your data from the backup. By performing backups and erasing the data remotely, you keep your information safe from malicious individuals and can restore it later.

Video Description

In the first scene, the phrase "Enable remote location and backup" appears. A man is using his cellphone, and a large image of the cellphone screen behind him shows that he is enabling the remote location and backup functions.

In the second scene, the man is sitting at a desk using a notebook. He looks worried. A thought balloon shows the figure of a criminal to indicate that his phone has been stolen.

The phrase changes to "In case of loss or theft, you can erase the device's data and restore it on another cellphone." The man accesses the device's location website, chooses the "Erase data" option, confirms the action, and a message shows that the data has been erased from the device.

In the final scene, the man restores the data on another cellphone from the backup made on the old phone. The process is completed, and the man smiles and claps.
