Abusive VPNs

Description

Many VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) offer to enhance your privacy by encrypting and creating an exclusive path for your Internet communications. However, it is important to stay alert, as some VPNs may abuse their services by collecting your data or even allowing malware to infect your device.

With the rise in popularity of VPNs, many companies have started offering this service, sometimes for free. When using a VPN, we expect not only that our browsing data will be protected from third parties, but also that this information will remain private from the VPN itself. This means that VPNs should not store logs —files containing traffic records—or compromise our privacy. Unfortunately, some VPNs may not fulfill this role and operate in an abusive manner.

Abusive VPNs often sell your data for financial gain and have vulnerabilities that can be exploited to infect your device with malware (malicious programs designed for various purposes, such as stealing private data, sending spam, or corrupting our data).

Therefore, be cautious when selecting a VPN service. Look for information about the credibility of these services through online articles and check reviews by other users.

Other important tips:
1. Choose a VPN that uses up-to-date and established technologies (for example, OpenVPN.
2. Review their Privacy and Usage Policies and make sure that the VPN does not keep data logs or that it only retains the minimum information necessary for its functioning, not storing any information that can be used to identify the VPN user.
3. Check the number of available servers and their location to make sure they meet your needs.
4. Check for any service restrictions, such as limits on the number of connected devices, speed limitations, and platform compatibility.

By following these recommendations, you will be able to choose a VPN service that meets your needs and effectively enhances your privacy and security.

Video Description

The animation begins with a woman researching on her computer and looking at VPN advertisements. The phrase "Are you choosing a VPN?" appears above her, then quickly changes to "Be careful! Some VPNs are abusive!" An exclamation mark appears, symbolizing attention.

In the next scene, the phrase "They don't respect your privacy!" appears. Beneath this, three houses connect to a VPN server. On this connection, a shield with a skull symbol indicates an abusive VPN. Logs —files containing traffic records— saved by the VPN are being sold to a shady man for money. Piles of banknotes appear below the symbol of the abusive VPN.

Finally, the scene shifts back to the woman from the beginning of the animation, now holding a magnifying glass in her hand. She looks at a review website and sees that the VPN service has a poor rating of 1.3 out of 5. The woman disapproves of the service, and the final phrase reads: "Before choosing a VPN, research and check the service's reputation."
